Brutal Voxel Doom is the next must-play version of the classic

Everyone knows by now that Doom is one of the most moddable PC games of all time. From cursed Bubsy crossovers to totally unexpected genre switcheroos, Doom is the one game you can rely on to stay moddable no matter what, and Brutal Voxel Doom underlines this point further still.

As its title plainly explains, Brutal Voxel Doom is the unholy combination of two extremely important classic Doom mods: Brutal Doom and Voxel Doom, wherein the tech backing of the latter is mixed with the gory violence of the former. We’re still uncertain whether Brutal Voxel Doom manages to outpace Doom Eternal in the sheer violence factor of the experience, but we do know that it sure as heck is trying. Impressively so, in fact.

Uploaded to ModDB by the mod author Derrick Davison, Brutal Voxel Doom takes the baseline voxel experience provided by modder Cheello and upgrades it with some of the emblematic features of Brutal Doom. Voxel Doom essentially rebuilds the base game’s roster of creatures, weapons, and other assorted assets in full 3D voxels, staying remarkably close to the original graphics of the game.

As per Davison, Brutal Voxel Doom is way more than just a gory take on Voxel Doom, as it comes with a suite of AI improvements and some interesting new content, to boot:

• All demons now support headshot kills.
• Voxel positions for jumping and crouching for the Doom Slayer.
• Alternative Zombieman variants (Black, Helmet, Chainsaw, Shielded); new Zombie Skeleton fodder enemy; new Mecha-Zombie enemy.
• Alternative Imp variants (Dark, Nightmare, etc.).
• Bonus takedown options for demons.
• Various new attacks for some demons.
• Revenants have jetpacks.
• Cyber Mancubus demons now spawn in the game.
• Certain Quake monsters now spawn in the game (Ogre, Shambler).
• Zombie Tank enemy.
• Includes Led’s generic weapon mod and Nash Gore.

This list is, mind, non-exhaustive as per Davison’s comments. Gun-toting enemies will now, for example, take cover and reload their weapons, and Imps will leap at the Doom Slayer to deal extra damage if possible. The addition of bonus creatures from Quake, of all things, is bound to spice things up further still, and the action is bound to feel extra crunchy and badass thanks to the presence of Brutal Doom gameplay improvements as well.

An impressive package, then. Although we don’t think this advanced version of Doom will run on a smart toothbrush or an audio spectrogram, it sure does look like great fun. Especially if you’re eager for something new and interesting, but appreciably familiar in all the ways that matter.
