Darkest Dungeon 2: Best Plague Doctor Build

The Plague Doctor is one of the first heroes received in Darkest Dungeon 2, acting as a supporting character and a debuff specialist. Without her, the early game journey is practically impossible. Her healing and ability to take out large heroes are top-notch.

Players will wind up unlocking new heroes in Darkest Dungeon 2 including some incredible support options. But the Plague Doctor remains one of the best heroes for the entire game. With the right build, she’s the favorite character for many successful adventuring parties.

Skills

Darkest Dungeon 2 Incision Deathblow

  • Magnesium Rain
  • Incision
  • Noxious Blast
  • Battlefield Medicine
  • Indiscriminate Science

The first three skills, Magnesium Rain, Incision, and Noxious Blast, all add different damage-over-time effects to their targets. Between the bleed, blight, and fire damage, big boss targets won’t be able to endure the storm, making this one of the strongest plague doctors in all of gaming.

Without bias, healing is the most important thing in Darkest Dungeon 2. The concept of the game is to wear players down before reaching the end. Battlefield Medicine and Indiscriminate Science break this by removing the possibility of attrition.

Path

The Alchemist also makes a good case to be used in this build but because this Plague Doctor is designed to fight on the back lines, the extra healing from Surgeon is clearly the way to go. All three paths have drawbacks but this one is the least impactful.

Decreasing the odds of adding blight is not pleasant but the path negates the nerf with more melee damage. As popular characters return to the franchise, the Plague Doctor can cement a place of favoritism in players’ hearts with extra healing and health to keep the party alive through the worst battles.

Trinkets

  • Annotated Textbook
  • Indelible Protectorate

The trick for Annotated Textbook is that it must be combined with Medicinal Herbs (see the next section) or else should not be used at all. The melee crit chance is alright but the real kicker is the extra 50% healing with both items equipped.

While many paths and items have huge drawbacks, Indelible Protectorate is a simple, flat upgrade of 20% to all healing given. It can be tempting to give the Plague Doctor a boost to her debuff skills (which are some of the most dangerous curses in gaming history) and, if players can’t find these trinkets, those types of items are the next best thing.

Combat Item

Medicinal Herbs removed debuffs. Battlefield Medicine does the same but that ability can only be used three times in every encounter and some battles will involve high-health enemies that last for longer than Battlefield Medicine can keep up with.

Additionally, Battlefield Medicine should be used primarily to heal. Using it to clear a debuff on a high-health ally is a bit of a waste. Instead, use Medicinal Herbs. Make sure to always leave at least one charge so that the extra healing from the Annotated Textbook trinket remains in play.
