Destiny 2 Players Hit Back As Season Pass Price Increases To

Big changes are coming to Season of the Deep in Destiny 2. Class abilities are getting tuned (RIP Titan shoulder charges), Finest Matterweave and Rainmaker are both being deprecated, and best of all, there’s not going to be an increase in the player level cap. There’s also going to be a huge overhaul of Destiny’s economy, with Exotic Engrams and crafting getting easier to perform.

There’s also going to be an overhaul to Destiny 2’s real-world economy. Specifically, the price of individual season passes will increase from 1,000 Silver to 1,200 Silver. The season pass plus ten free ranks bundle will increase from 2,000 to 2,200 Silver. As a reference, you can purchase 1,100 Silver for $10 USD.

After more than six years without a price increase, it seems inflation has finally hit Destiny 2. However, what has fans in an uproar isn’t the rising cost of an individual season pass, but the fact you can’t purchase it for less than $15 USD.

As of the time of this writing, Silver can only be purchased in certain increments, meaning the least amount someone can spend to buy enough Silver to afford the season pass is 1,700 Silver for $15 USD. It’s the same reason why hot dogs and buns never come packaged in the same amount; it forces the consumer to buy more.

Fans are already calling the move “scummy,” with some pointing out Destiny’s monetization has taken a turn for the worse with the Event Pass. Last year, Destiny 2’s nominally free events suddenly required Guardians to pay 1,000 Silver for a collection of cosmetics that in the past would have been unlocked for free.

“Trying to push people into buying deluxe editions for ‘discounted’ seasons,” noted one astute Redditor. “Either go deluxe or buy the larger silver bundle, have extra silver left over, and convince yourself to buy a little more silver to get that cosmetic. Standard industry greed.”

The price increase comes at an interesting time for Destiny 2. The latest Lightfall expansion wasn’t received well by fans, with criticisms levied against its nonsensical story and the slew of bugs and glitches the expansion introduced. One fan said they expected to see the quality of each new season increase to reflect the increased price of season passes. We’ll see if that happens when Season of the Deep arrives on May 23.
