Gamers Debate The Most Emotional Ending Credits

Games have the power to evoke a wide range of emotions in players. Whether it’s joy or excitement, players have always enjoyed the experience, but occasionally a game can leave you feeling more emotional than expected. In a recent discussion on Resetera, gamers have been debating the most emotional ending credits they ever encountered.

The discussion got started when a user by the name of Norsuchamp created a thread called Ending Credits That Made You Emotional, pointing specifically to Mario Kart 64, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 9. “You can argue if the dialogue counts to the actual ending credits, but hey, they are included in the video which is titled Final Fantasy 9 Credits and so I’ll take it,” Norsuchamp noted. “Song itself is a real tear jerker, but damn, those lines that Zidane and Garnet are saying to each other before the staff credits start rolling in.”

Several different games including Red Dead Redemption 2 and Nier: Automata have been frequently entering the conversation. Majora’s Mask has also popped up quite a few times, the user going by the name of Andrin for example noting how the end credits “are a perfect capstone to the game, showing off all of the people whose lives you’ve changed during your journey.” Andrin went on to explain how “the credits song reaching its crescendo on the scene of Pamela and her father embracing always drew me to tears as a kid.”

“I’d also like to mention the end credits of Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker,” Andrin added. “I won’t post them here because they contain spoilers for the entire game from A Realm Reborn onwards, but the sequence felt really cathartic after the emotional journey you’d been on through Endwalker. Some other great ones already mentioned are Wind Waker, the Kingdom Hearts series, Persona 4 and Persona 5, Super Mario 64, Okami, and the Xenoblade series.”

While some might dismiss games as a form of media, the emotional responses that players have to them prove that games can be more than just entertainment. They can explore complex themes, tell engaging stories, and leave players feeling deeply invested. The ending credits can occasionally seem like a small thing, but they clearly have the ability to leave a lasting impact on players, bringing a sense of closure to the experience. Whether it’s a particularly poignant song, a touching scene, or just the feeling that it’s all over, the ending credits are a testament to the power of games to affect their players.
