Highly Detailed Minecraft Steve Is a Blocky Nightmare

Someone decides that Steve, one of the main protagonists in Minecraft, needs to be a lot more detailed, and the results are nightmarish.

Perhaps in a bid to inject a lot more horror into Minecraft, someone decided to create a video which shows a rendition of the otherwise neutral Steve in such detail that it turns the blocky character into nightmare fuel. Highly regarded as one of the most successful indie games of all time, the story of Mojang’s sandbox IP is pretty much legendary at this point, starting life as a Dungeon Keeper-inspired project before dominating the gaming world on a global scale.

One of its biggest draws is that it has wide-ranging appeal, with a family-friendly vibe that makes it suitable for youngsters as well as adults. Given this, not many people would describe the game using the word “horror,” but there are some aspects of Minecraft that make it a bit scary, such as the more hostile mobs that players can come across. In general, it’s far removed from the more terrifying side of gaming, but there are some people who feel this needs to be rectified.

In a recent post on Reddit, user pointlessimon decided to create a Minecraft clip showing what the game would be like if main protagonist Steve had a lot more detail. The result is something truly dark and unsettling. As the camera approaches the game’s hero, who can be seen punching a tree in the darkness, Steve suddenly disappears. The camera then spins around, only to be met with the image of the Minecraft character in all his detailed glory. While still unmistakably the blocky Steve fans known and love, the fuzzy hair, deep wrinkles in his skin, and the fact that he stares straight at the viewers gives him a much more horrifying look.

It’s only a short clip, but it really shows how someone can take a family-friendly game and turn it into something nightmarish. Steve is the face of Minecraft, being the first character that players jumped into the shoes of when the game released more than a decade ago. He has seen many fans through those first lonely nights on a new playthrough, but to see him as this heavily detailed, almost monstrous, protagonist makes him look quite creepy.

Minecraft‘s near-endless replay value, as well as the aforementioned appeal to all audiences, is one of the reasons the game is still going strong after all these years. There’s no telling what the future holds for Mojang’s open-world title, but it’s probably safe to assume that the developer won’t be incorporating pointlessimon’s detailed version of Steve into the colorful world.

Minecraft is available on Mobile, PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
