Hogwarts Legacy Update Makes Controversial Change Not Mentioned in Patch Notes

Hogwarts Legacy‘s latest update has made a controversial change not mentioned in the patch notes: the Unforgivable Curses are no longer usable in the boss fight against Cassandra Mason. Unforgivable Curses have always drawn a great deal of interest from Hogwarts Legacy fans, as many were curious to see how exactly the developers would implement them in the open world Harry Potter game.
For those who may be unfamiliar with Harry Potter lore, the Unforgivable Curses are three particularly heinous spells that are illegal to use in the Wizarding World. There’s Crucio, which tortures anyone unlucky enough to get hit with it; Imperio, which puts the target under the spellcaster’s control; and finally, Avada Kedavra, aka the Killing Curse. As it so happens, all three Unforgivable Curses are featured in Hogwarts Legacy for players to learn and wield at their discretion.
While there were some tweaks to the Unforgivable Curses to make them fit better in a video game, they mostly work like they do in the Harry Potter books and movies. This means that anyone hit with Avada Kedavra dies instantly, which is something that Hogwarts Legacy players have taken advantage of to make quick work of some of the game’s bosses. As of the latest update, though, it seems that Hogwarts Legacy players can’t use Unforgivable Curses on Cassandra Mason, something that wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes.

What was mentioned in the latest Hogwarts Legacy update patch notes was that the developers resolved an issue where the game would crash if players used Avada Kedavra on Cassandra Mason at the beginning of the boss fight. It’s possible that this has in turn caused the issues where players are restricted from using Unforgivable Curses on her entirely. It’s also possible that the developers did this on purpose, though the reasons for doing so are unclear. Some have suggested that it’s because an Auror is around when the fight happens so it wouldn’t make lore-sense for the player character to use Unforgivable Curses, but that’s just speculation. Regardless, some fans have taken to social media to express their disapproval of the change.
Some Hogwarts Legacy players may be wondering exactly who Cassandra Mason is, and that’s because she may not actually appear in their version of the game. Cassandra Mason appears as part of Hogwarts Legacy‘s PlayStation-exclusive Hogsmeade quest, so only those on PS4 and PS5 have had the chance to battle her so far. The quest is expected to make its way to other platforms later, so hopefully any lingering issues with it are ironed out by then.
Hogwarts Legacy is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X with a Nintendo Switch version also available.
