How to get Cloutium in Hydroneer: Journey to Volcalidus DLC

In the new Hydroneer: Journey to Volcalidus DLC, Cloutium is a very useful resource. It’s not quite as common as Iron or Gold, but also not as rare as Corestone. Despite its usefulness, it can be difficult to find if you’re not sure exactly where to look. Here’s how and where to get Cloutium in Hydroneer: Journey to Volcalidus.

Best way to get Cloutium

In order to get Cloutium in Hydroneer: Journey to Volcalidus, you need to dig in the Tier 2 area of ice at a mining site. The starting site, Dawn Rest, is not deep enough to reach Tier 2. However, all of the other mining sites in the DLC go down to Tier 3, so you will have no problem finding Cloutium.

Once you’ve got access to one of the non-starter mining sites, you’ll need to dig down into the Tier 2 area of the icy lake. You’ll know you’re in the Tier 2 area when the texture changes and looks a darker shade of blue. You will need a Tier 2 tools to dig this deep, so make sure you construct a Tier 2 shop at New Glade before embarking on this journey. You can purchase all of the Tier 2 tools at the Tier 2 shop.

A Tier 2 Shovel will be your first goal because that will allow you to dig up the Tier 2 ice and put it in a bucket to then be harvested. As long as you dug into Tier 2 ground, it has a chance of resulting in Cloutium. The further down you go, the higher the chance of Cloutium.

Eventually, you will be able to make your way into the Tier 3 area which is roughly 16+ tiles deep under the surface. Here you will begin to get even more Cloutium, as well as bigger chunks of Cloutium Ore thus resulting in a heavier yield when smelted.

Of course, you don’t have to dig it all by hand. Once you’ve cleared out a spot in either the Tier 2 or Tier 3 area underground, you can plop down some Mining Drills to start automatically mining that tier. As long as the drill is in the Tier 2 or lower area, it will have a chance of mining Cloutium.

What is Cloutium used for?

Cloutium is smelted into bar form and then used for a variety of creations. Cloutium is required to build a Tier 3 Workshop as well as the automatic Mining Drill in the south. You’ll also use Cloutium to create your own Mining Drills, Harvesters, and Tools at the Volcalidus Peak forge.

Also, some of the Item Requisition contracts that NPC’s around the world will provide you with require Cloutium. Once you start digging deeper, Cloutium becomes quite common like Iron and Gold. However, it’s overall a more valuable ore, so when creating items purely for selling to the Jeweller consider making them out of Cloutium.
