Minecraft 1.21 New Status Effects Explained

The mid-2024 release window for Minecraft‘s anticipated 1.21 update is drawing near, and fans already have an excellent idea of what content they can expect to receive when it eventually drops. While 1.21 sadly will not introduce a brand-new biome to the game, it will bring about a wide range of new mobs, useful blocks, and one of the most complex structures that the title has ever seen.

These new structures for Minecraft‘s 1.21 update are called Trial Chambers, and they will offer a fascinating twist to the sandbox title’s usual combat experiences. The challenge behind navigating these chambers and reaping their rewards is boosted by a slew of new status effects that will also come with the 1.21 update, and players should be aware of how these effects might impact them within Trial Chambers and beyond.

Minecraft’s next update already has a broad scope, but recent snapshots prove that yet another area of the game will see big shifts.

All the New Status Effects Coming with Minecraft’s 1.21 Update

Status effects have been a part of Minecraft‘s core experience for some time, finding their roots in the title back in 2011. These effects can be positive or negative for the player, ranging from things like poison damage to increased movement and mining speed. There are well over 30 unique status effects that players can currently use or fall victim to in Minecraft, and it is confirmed that the upcoming 1.21 update will add the following five new effects to the title:

• Oozing
• Weaving
• Infested
• Wind Charged
• Raid/Trial Omen

Minecraft 1.21: Oozing Effect

The Oozing status effect is one of the most useful upcoming additions to Minecraft. Any player or mob that is inflicted with Oozing will spawn two medium-sized Slime mobs upon death, creating chaos in the heat of battle. While Oozing can cause a disadvantage to the player in the heavily populated rooms of Trial Chambers, it can be used to revolutionize Slime farming outside the new structures. Oozing can be applied to potions or arrows by brewing a Slime Block, and if applied to a herd of mobs like chickens, for example, can lead to an essentially endless supply of Slime that can be used to the player’s content.

Minecraft 1.21: Weaving Effect

Minecraft‘s upcoming Weaving effect is quite similar to Oozing, but instead spawns cobwebs around an affected entity upon death instead of Slime mobs. Again, players can easily be caught in the slowing effect of these cobwebs while navigating Minecraft‘s Trial Chambers, but outside of this, the Oozing effect is the only renewable source of cobwebs in the entire game. This can give players access to endless amounts of string in 1.21, making items like wool, arrows, leads, and bows much easier to craft in greater supplies.

Minecraft 1.21: Infested Effect

The Infested status effect lacks the usefulness of Oozing and Weaving, with Infested entities having a 10% chance to spawn between one and three Silverfish whenever they are attacked. Of course, Silverfish do not drop anything other than small amounts of XP upon death, meaning that Infested has no real farming utility and only really serves to overwhelm a player when attacking any entity that is inflicted with the effect.

Minecraft 1.21: Wind Charged Effect

Wind Charged is another effect that can cause a real disadvantage to the player in combat. Entities imbued with this effect expel a burst of wind energy upon death, launching nearby mobs and players in different directions.

While this effect is not as dangerous in normal exploration, its presence in Trial Chambers can easily launch players off platforms or into traps, with potentially devastating effects. Players can brew potions with the Wind Charged effect by using a Breeze Rod, and this can be combined with ranged attacks on groups of enemies for excellent crowd control, potentially even being used to knock these groups off of high ledges.

Minecraft 1.21: Raid/Trial Omen Effect

The last upcoming status effect coming with Minecraft 1.21 is the Raid/Trial Omen effect. The Raid Omen effect is an overhaul of the already-existing Bad Omen, which is used to trigger raids in Minecraft‘s village structures. A Bad Omen effect will turn into Raid Omen upon entering a village as of 1.21, giving players a 30-second grace period before the raid begins. The Bad Omen effect will also only be obtainable through drinking the new Ominous Bottle item in 1.21, which is dropped from Pillager Raid Captains.

1.21 will also allow the Bad Omen effect to turn into the new Trial Omen effect within Trial Chambers. If players are impacted by Bad Omen near a Trial Spawner, then an Ominous Event will trigger. These Ominous Events in 1.21 are more difficult versions of usual Trial Chamber encounters, and brave players can smartly inflict themselves with Bad Omen inside a Chamber to maximize difficulty with the trade-off of much better loot and rewards.
