MMO Fan Makes Nostalgic Discovery at Goodwill

Goodwill is a common source of fabulous retro finds for anyone looking to expand their collections, and one fan has made a nostalgic MMO discovery at their local location.
Because of all the donations that it receives, Goodwill can be a great source of clothes, comic books, retro games, and even the odd MMO product. Retro gamers have been utilizing the second-hand market for decades, with past Goodwill finds including multiple Nintendo games in a single case, SNES cartridges in impeccable condition, and Atari classics at prices that would pale in comparison to the specialty shops.
Since the advent of the MMO genre in the 90s, many MMOs have been shut down as technology has advanced. One MMO fan has now come across one of the shutdown classics at Goodwill. Reddit user SquireX recently shared an image of their Goodwill MMO find, highlighting a boxed copy of 2004’s City of Heroes which tasked players with creating their ideal superheroes to explore the open world area of Paragon City. The game was priced at $2.49, which may still be more than what it’s worth to some fans as it’s no longer playable through official servers.

City of Heroes servers were shut down by Cryptic and Paragon Studios in 2012. Much of the replies to their post expressed their nostalgia and celebrated the MMO for what it was when it was fresh. The City of Heroes and City of Villains games fell under the NCSoft umbrella when they were active, with current NCSoft titles including Guild Wars 2, Lineage 2, and Blade & Soul.
Although SquireX is unable to connect to official City of Heroes servers, like World of Warcraft there are many private servers that are able to keep the superhero MMO alive in the 2020s. Despite NCSoft still supporting a library of titles, there are few superhero MMOs for fans to choose between, with Champions Online and DC Universe Online carrying much of the load since the conclusion of City of Heroes and City of Villains.
City of Heroes was an MMORPG available for PC, but the servers have been closed since 2012.
