Modern Warfare 2’s New Battle Rifle Is Not What Anyone Expected

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is due to receive a new batch of seasonal content on April 12, and one of the featured highlights is an all-new battle rifle chambered in 6.8 mm, but it’s not the long-awaited Sig MCX SPEAR that some players have been asking for. Instead, Infinity Ward has opted for a stranger option that may end up being more interesting in the long run.

While Modern Warfare 2 fudges its guns’ names to differentiate them from the real deal to some extent, they’re all still based on real-world weapon platforms, and some of them are on the cutting edge of what’s available at the time. The Sig MCX SPEAR, for example, is the real-world high-caliber variant of the M13B, and most players expected that the developers would simply bring a new entry into its receiver group.

This, however, isn’t going to be the case anytime soon from the looks of it. Instead, Modern Warfare 2‘s new battle rifle is the General Dynamics’ RM277, its in-game designation being Cronen Squall. The curious bit here is that both the RM277 and the SPEAR were competing in the US military’s Next Generation Squad Weapons program, though the latter ended up winning in the end. This means that, in effect, the US military will eventually adopt the SPEAR weapons platform, making it all the stranger that Infinity Ward chose not to implement its most interesting offering.

As Reddit user BleedingUranium explains, however, odds are good that many players will find the fictionalized version of the RM277 more interesting than a high-caliber M13B would’ve been. The Cronen Squall is a high-powered bullpup rifle that looks fairly unique and interesting, making it a solid companion to Modern Warfare 2‘s re-release of the Intervention sniper rifle. On top of that, it’s still entirely possible that the Sig SPEAR might end up coming out later on.

Since Modern Warfare 2 features a huge array of weapons, it presents Infinity Ward with one of the most challenging Call of Duty metas yet. It remains to be seen how exactly the Squall might end up differentiating itself from the rest of the game’s arsenal, but its real-world counterpart was built to be one of the finest firearm platforms created so far.

While there are many critiques that could be directed at Call of Duty‘s seasonal content schedule, Infinity Ward does seem to have picked up the pace for Season 3 of Modern Warfare 2. With four all-new weapons, a number of long-awaited Operators, almost half a dozen dedicated new Multiplayer maps, and heaps more, it’s possible that this may be the game’s best-acclaimed season yet.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
