My Hero Academia: Toru Hagakure’s Invisibility Quirk, Explained

The invisible hero and not the most ‘seen’ character in the My Hero Academia series, Toru Hagakure, otherwise known as the Invisible Girl, is a student of Class 1-A at U. A High and, along with her peers, learning to become a Pro Hero.

Although she may not be the most visible character in the series, Toru is known to be a bubbly and cheerful person and often tries to maintain an attitude of positivity during challenging times. Despite being invisible, she tries her best to interact with her classmates and doesn’t let her invisibility get in the way of making friends.

How Does the Invisibility Quirk Work?

Without her invisibility quirk, Toru would have been just another ordinary girl, it is her quirk that sets her aside from the others. The only way to know if Toru was present was by seeing her gloves or her outfit, as if it were hovering in the air. Unlike quirks that need activation, Toru’s quirk is continuously active. This means that for her to be completely invisible she would need to take off her clothes, giving her advantages over her opponents. As awkward as this may be for her classmates, the resourcefulness of her quirk is that she is able to sneak past guards undetected as well as take out opponents by surprise when in combat.

Not much is known about how Toru is able to navigate and experience the world in her condition, but this does not stop her from being supportive of her peers. She is seen to always lending a helping hand or provide emotional support when needed, making her a well-liked person among her classmates. This is seen by the friendships she creates with Tsuyu Asui and Ochaco Uraraka. While My Hero Academia mostly focuses on the protagonist’s growth in the series, they also show how the side characters also develop as they too face various challenges and obstacles. Toru learns to embrace her uniqueness and develops confidence in her abilities. In the beginning, she appears shy and awkward, but towards the latter part of the series, Toru becomes more proactive and is a key character in the development of the story.

What are the Benefits of Being an Invisible Hero?

To explain the benefit of Toru’s quirk in one word is stealth. Her ability to avoid being caught thanks to her invisibility quirk is one of the reasons the students are able to use stealth to get the advantage over opponents. While Toru does not possess high physical power, she is capable of short-range combat with the ability to execute surprise attacks. Toru was also able to develop the ability to manipulate light using sunlight, a powerful move that she can use to blind enemies by flashing light on them. This

The move was also later considered one of her special moves and was named Warp Refraction.

Toru can also combine her quirk with Aoyama’s navel laser quirk by warping the light Aoyama shoots out, blinding anything in the area. This is one of the extremely powerful combinations of attacks capable of stopping multiple enemies in their tracks. Thanks to her unique ability, Toru was selected by Yoroi Musha to train under him to work on her abilities further. Toru was also one of the first to find out that Aoyama was the one who was feeding All For One information, making him the traitor. One of the disadvantages of Toru’s quirk is that she is unable to turn off her quirk at will, this means she cannot visually communicate with her peers if she needs to, as she cannot be seen but only heard. She is also not completely undetectable, if someone were to use thermal imaging, they would be able to detect her using this method.
