No, Leon Isn’t Fighting Ash With Eternatus In The Master’s Eight

The latest Pokemon episode seems to reveal Leon has Eternatus on his team, but how is this possible?

eternatus leon

Some of the promotional shots for this weekend’s episode of Pokemon are causing quite a stir online. The art depicts Ash, Goh, and the current Monarch of the World Coronation series, Leon. Between them is Eternatus, the Legendary Dragon Pokemon who once threatened all of Galar in Sword & Shield. With the Master’s Eight Finals on the horizon, this image would seem to suggest that Leon has been secretly holding Eternatus throughout the tournament, waiting until the final battle to surprise Ash with this god-tier Legendary.

If you’ve been following Journeys since the beginning, you know that isn’t possible. Here’s what’s probably going on in that promo still and what we can expect to actually happen in the final battle.

THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Eternatus first appeared at the very beginning of the current series, known as Journeys in the States. Much like the games, Chairman Rose of the Macro Cosmos Corporation hatches a plan to capture Eternatus and exploit its power to generate unlimited energy for all of Galar. Rose discovers Leon at a young age and grooms him to become a champion Pokemon trainer that will one day defeat and capture Eternatus for him. That day comes sooner than expected when Eternatus breaks free from its containment in the energy plant beneath Wyndon. Leon challenges the Pokemon but is unsuccessful in catching it. However, with the help of Zacian and Zamazenta, Ash and Goh are able to weaken Eternatus and capture it together. Technically belonging to Goh, Eternatus is sealed away in an underground vault by Professor Magnolia.

It remained there until this week, when Leon revealed to Ash and Goh he had been working with Professor Magnolia to rehabilitate Eternatus. The Pokemon has an understandable mistrust of people, but Leon hopes that it can one day live in peace with the people of Galar. With Goh’s blessing, Leon takes ownership of Eternatus so he can continue training it and helping it learn to trust humans.

That’s what’s happening in the promotional teasers for the newest episode. You can clearly see the stands are empty and Goh, Sonia, and Professor Magnolia are all there with Ash and Leon. This isn’t a scene from the final battle, but rather an intermission before it to tie up loose ends ahead of the finale. You don’t have to worry about Ash getting blindsided by one of the strongest Pokemon. Leon and Eternatus have just begun their journey together – they’re a long way off from battling together in the most important tournament of all time.

But big questions still remain ahead of the finals. So far, we’ve only seen Leon’s Charizard, Dragapult, and (Mega) Rillaboom in action. This puts Leon at a significant advantage, since he knows Ash’s full roster but Ash doesn’t know his. We have yet to see Corviknight, which Leon has in both the anime and the game, in battle. We also don’t know whether he has an Aegislash or not like his video game counterpart, and even if he does, the sixth slot is still a complete mystery. There’s one more episode before the final battle begins, so we might still find out some clues about Leon’s team. The finale starts October 21, so it won’t be long before we finally see how the Master’s Eight ends. One thing is for certain though: it won’t end with Eternatus wiping Ash’s whole team.
