Pokemon Developer Game Freak Is Working On A Triple-A Samurai Game

Game Freak, the developer behind the Pokemon series, and publisher Private Division have announced that they are teaming up to create a brand new, action-adventure samurai game. We don’t know much about the title right now, but the developer announced that it is currently being developed under the codename Project Bloom and will be released at some point in the 2026 fiscal year.

Speaking on the partnership with Private Division, Game Freak director Kota Furushima explained that the team is excited be working on a new IP that is “bold and tonally different” from Game Freak’s prior work. Furushima also says that Private Division’s “track record and global expertise” was the main reason behind the partnership, and promises that we’ll hear more about the title in the future.

On the other side of the partnership, head of Private Division Michael Worosz has explained that the team is ready to help Game Freak “unleash their potential” and is “honored” that the developer chose Private Division to be the first Western publisher that it has ever worked with. To celebrate the occasion, a piece of concept art was also shown off via the publisher’s official Twitter account.

To say this announcement from Game Freak was unexpected is one heck of an understatement. Very rarely has the developer strayed from developing Pokemon titles, although it does occasionally release smaller titles such as Little Town Hero or Pocket Card Jockey. However, this is the first time in a while that Game Freak has dedicated itself to a big project that isn’t Pokemon, so we’ll have to wait and see if the team can rise to the task.

It’ll be interesting to see what this means for the Pokemon franchise as well, as Game Freak working on two massive projects is fairly unlikely. It’s possible that we could start seeing a lot more spinoffs announced and released in the coming years, as those are mostly handled by other developers with Game Freak’s oversight. For example, the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes were developed by ILCA and New Pokemon Snap was developed by Bandai Namco.

As for what spinoffs we could see announced, it’s been rumored for a while that a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game is in development, and there has also been a lot of requests for a Pokemon Let’s Go-style remake of Gold and Silver. Whatever the case, it seems like Game Freak is going to be pretty busy for the next few years.
