With another week comes a new rotation of Pokemon found in Pokemon Go Raids, including changes in both Five-Star and Mega Raids. When it comes to the Pokemon defending Mega Raids, you can expect to encounter Mega Gengar, the Mega Evolution of a Generation One fan-favorite.

You will want to take advantage of Mega Gengar’s presence in Raids, providing you with several in-game rewards, most notably Gengar Mega Energy, a resource used to Mega Evolve a Gengar of your own. That being said, defeating this Pokemon in its Raid and securing these rewards will come with some difficulty, so we’ve put together a guide with everything you need to know about this PvE encounter.

Being a Mega Raid, this is a PvE encounter that you’ll want to take advantage of the help of others, proving to be an impossible task to complete alone. For this reason, it is recommended that you attempt Mega Gengar’s Raid with the help of other players, whether that be in person or remotely.

For this specific Raid, you will want to make sure that you go into it with a group of at least three to five players. This will ensure that you have enough firepower to defeat this challenging Raid Pokemon, guaranteeing that you secure all available rewards.

To further your chances of success for this Raid, make sure to Mega Evolve one of the Pokemon that you’re battling with if possible.

This will temporarily increase the power of that Pokemon and boost your and your allies’ attacks that match the Mega Evolved Pokemon’s type during a Raid.

Mega Gengar: Strengths And Weaknesses

Due to the difficulty of this Raid, it is essential that you assemble your Raid team with Mega Gengar’s specific strengths and weaknesses in mind. Mega Gengar is extremely resistant to several different types of attacks, including Grass, Fairy, Normal, Poison, Bug, and Fighting-type attacks, so make sure to avoid using Pokemon that possess this attack type.

Mega Gengar is extremely resistant to Normal, Poison, and Bug-type attacks, only dealing 39 percent of their standard damage in this Raid.

Further, Mega Gengar is even more resistant to Fighting-type attacks, only dealing 24 percent of their standard damage against this Pokemon.

Luckily, Mega Gengar is weak to four types of attacks – Psychic, Dark, Ground, and Ghost. This gives you some degree of flexibility when it comes to selecting your Pokemon, although it is essential that they use attacks that are one of these four types.

In addition to taking advantage of this Pokemon’s vulnerabilities, you will want to make sure that you’re keeping Same Type Attack Bonus in mind when deciding on which Pokemon to use for this encounter.

Same Type Attack Bonus, or STAB, is a mechanic that increases the damage that your attacks deal if they match the type of the Pokemon using them.

Fortunately, there are several available Pokemon that have types and attacks that directly counter Mega Gengar in this Raid battle. Each of these Pokemon takes advantage of Mega Gengar’s four weaknesses, possessing powerful attacks that are either Psychic, Dark, Ground, or Ghost types.

Below you can find the best counters for the Raid against Mega Gengar, including options for all four of these types and their recommended moves.

Although the following Pokemon give you the greatest chances of succeeding in this Raid battle, you are not expected to have access to each of these top-tier Mega Gengar counters.

Because of this, feel free to use other strong Psychic, Dark, Ground, or Ghost types, still providing you with a strong chance of successfully completing this Raid.
