Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

The second game in Square Enix’s new Final Fantasy 7 trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been out for just over a week on PS5 — and we want to know what you make of this highly praised sequel. At the time of writing, Rebirth is one of the highest rated Final Fantasy titles ever released (according to critics), so we’re super interested in seeing how it ranks in our own games database.

We awarded the RPG a ‘great’ 8/10 in our Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PS5 review (the same score we gave Final Fantasy 7 Remake, for the record). “If you can push through the tedium of its open world busywork and padded storytelling, there’s a great sequel at the heart of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” we wrote. “If you enjoyed Remake and you have fond memories of the PS1 original, you’ll likely love every minute of Rebirth’s memorable, character-focused adventure.”

Absolutely outstanding game that expands and improves on its predecessor in every way. With all due respect to Elden Ring and BG3 (not really my genres of choice), this is my game of the generation so far.

It’s good but not as good as the first entry.

Many of those that have played the game have already agree on that fact.

That sentiment also reflects on the disappointing game sales in comparison.

Had to go for 8 myself.

After 60 hours, it feels not much general story, and you were correct with the padding; though a good chunk of it does allow better character development.

It’s just all the mini games that can become a bit overwhelming; but plugging through it all, aiming for 100% region completion as I can.

At least from my perspective, I’ve seen a lot of people absolutely love the game’s opening 10-20 hours or so. And I can understand that — there are some amazing moments.

But the game’s pacing gets absolutely destroyed about halfway through, and I think that’s when some players will start to lose patience. If you can push through it, there are even more amazing moments to come, but it’ll be interesting to see how fans feel about the game once they’ve completed the whole thing.

6.5. Great new combat mechanics and great story, ruined by bloated mini-game trash and the open world map that was so poorly designed that your EX soldier still can’t jump or climb anywhere in 2024. So much so that he had to walk around the cliff to find a different route just to go to a tower that was literally a jump away for any normal human.

And whomever designed Gongaga Jungle needs to die in a fire.

What an embarrassing and lazy attempts at an open world when games like Tears of the Kingdom and Xenoblade Chronicles exist.

Im actually not really enjoying it as much as I thought I would which makes me sad, im about 30ish hours in and Its starting to feel like such a chore. When its good its great! But theres just too much bloat for me atm.

@ShogunRok I can see your point about the pacing.
Personally I’m loving it, but I’ve hit a point where the pacing has dropped for sure. Again, it changes nothing for me and I’m adoring this game, but you definitely have a point.

I’m hoping the side missions are handled the same way as the first game, in that when it comes to NG+ the game considers them complete and you only have to activate them if you want a specific outcome.
My second run will just be a tear through the main plot on hard mode if that’s the case.

atm though considering what I’ve played it remains a 9 – 10 for me.
I don’t mind the slower pacing because it gives me more time in a setting I’ve loved for 25 years, but I can imagine it not being the same for newcomers.

@PaperAlien yeah the burnout rate is real. I’m just powering through the main story right now and if this is how they’re approaching the third game, I’m gonna skip it and just watch the events on Youtube.

Square is absolutely regressing with Rebirth.

@Shepherd_Tallon I think Rebirth is similar to Remake in that once you beat the game, you open up Chapter Selection and can go back and do/find stuff you missed. Not sure about NG+ though.

Chapter 6, I am loving every second, it’s up there with a 9-10, clearing almost everything just because it’s a delight to do it.

I love this kind of structure (way more than the first game) but of course I hope the story bits won’t be disappointing at the end of things

I’m 8-9 hours in. Just completed most of the open world stuff in the first area. There is a bit too much focus on open world nonsense without the puzzle aspects from games like Horizon to make it interesting. I do not like how often Chadley speaks.

Not much to say about combat as Remake was already great in that area. Enemies are a lot tougher this time though.

But at the same time it reminds of GOWR, BG3 in the best way where it feels like a hangout game with characters you genuinely care for. Not too fond of how often the women do that stupid bending towards the camera to look kawaii nonsense though.

So early impressions are 8.5/10. Maybe when the story kicks in it will go higher if the open world stuff grates it will go lower.

@Jersa7Darkangel I hope so. I’d like to be able to enjoy the plot in my second run without the need to worry about the busy work.
I’m loving ticking off the side stuff in my first run, but I know I’d like the option to skip it on my next few runs.

I’ve said it elsewhere, but I cannot be objective with this game. Eleventy billion stars/10. Nostalgia is a factor and I don’t care. The combat is super addicting, and getting wrecked can be fun because I’m finding all these cool Backline Synergies. I’m at 57%, completely cleared 2 of the 4 regions I’ve unlocked, and I WANT MOAR.

To be fair, I also LOVE AND ADORE AC: Odyssey as well, so I’m a bit of a weird one.

Easy 10/10. I’d give it an 11 if I could. Yes I’m bias, yes I’m a fanboy, no I don’t care. This lived up to all my expectations and the only real criticism I have is that there are way too many mini games.

Square is knocking it out of the park with this remake and I can’t wait for part 3.

@ceedj You’ve picked the words out of my brain. I simply can’t be objective with any game that has “Final Fantasy VII” in the name.
The side quests remind me of little bits from the first game, so I’m happy to go through them during this first run.
It’s like meeting a friend from school or something.

I’m on Chapter 8 and I’ve loved every second of it other than that blasted crunch mini-game! I don’t mind the open world myself but I’ve always enjoyed that loop of gameplay.

Also I’m playing it as someone who never played the original FF7 (yet. I plan to play it after the 3rd and final entry in the Remake series) so it’s not even nostalgia or anything. It’s just a really excellent RPG. The combat mechanics are simply best in class as far as action RPGs go.

@breakneck The story itself has pacing issues, sadly, but they won’t seem anywhere near as bad if you’re mainlining the game.

As someone who came fairly close to 100% completing this game when I reviewed it, I would highly recommend ignoring anything that tests your patience and just continue with the main story.

Bloat / padding is easily the game’s biggest issue, but thankfully, most of it is optional.

@Shepherd_Tallon @ceedj I am not even a FF7 hardcore fan but this went above and beyond my (kinda high to be honest) expectations and kind of retroactively made my consideration of P3R really sink. What a remake, what a game!

Halfway through chapter 5 right now and so far it’s on track to be a 10, but that’s not how it might land. Remake was a 10 for me, even with the cat mission. Lol. But, honestly, the whole game has been in that sort of slow “after Midgar” section and I’m appreciating that portion of the story more than I perhaps ever did. These days, I don’t get the luxury to ever play games any longer than 3 hours and even then I’m making a sacrifice to my sleep to do so, but whenever I do get to play, the game IS of great comfort and entertainment to me and I’m loving it, perhaps even more than 16, which I’d place above Baldur’s Gate and TotK personally. If my enjoyment continues like this all the way through, it’ll be an easy 10/10, even with its flaws. A 9/10 is an objectively fantastic title in my eyes, but a 10 hits you where you feel it most, and even if there are flaws, you look past or appreciate them because the game did so much otherwise to make it worthwhile, and I’m in that 10 landscape so far.

9/10 it’s well made, combat is good, all units have good roles and differences.

Personally had no issues with pacing or graphics etc.

10. No objectivity here, Im loving the game for what it is AND what it means to me.
For a gamer who looks in every corner and isnt in a rush, pacing simply wont bother me, its almost traditional for most jrpgs and Im all for it 😅

I’m on chapter 5 and I’m hovering over a 10 rn but slightly hesitating to give it that mainly cause the story isn’t gripping me nearly as much as it did in Remake or the original

But other than that, it’s been so much better than Remake in nearly every way. Character moments have been a plenty and they’re fun to watch. I usually hate remade music like Xenoblade 1s remastered soundtrack, but every piece here is familiar yet adds to it in a way that stands with the original music. And the world is so janky but fun to explore. Awkwardly jumping around cliffs took a bit to get used to but after awhile its just natural. And it helps that theres plenty to do and see. And seeing that only .6% of people have gotten the trophy for getting the stagger meter to 300% shows me people still don’t actually understand the combat and are just button mashing their way through lol

I also have yet to feel the pacing being off or the side quests being awful. In fact the side quests while certainly not Witcher 3 standards have been fun to do and give the party even more little interactions that just brings you closer to them. I’m hoping the game keeps it up. Cause I’m just having an amazing time with it so far

@Shepherd_Tallon Even the parts I find frustrating, I can’t help but admire the care put into those parts of it. The frogs! Aerith’s has a bow, Red’s “tail” glows and Cloud has a mini-buster sword on his back.

Ester! She is adorable! The Johnny side quest had me in stiches! Cloud’s “battle portrait” in a certain Queen’s Blood tournament match is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in the game, and lasts all of two seconds. I could go on, but you get it.

@Titntin It was the original FF VII that gave me the habit of looking behind everything in every game to make sure there are no missed chests or items. I had forgotten where that habit came from until I started having flashbacks during this game.

@ceedj The frogs and the parade for me. It took me an hour each to get the highest tier scores. I was getting so mad while doing them, but at the same time enjoying every second.
It’s emotional and nuts at the same time.

Still in Junon. Fantastic graphics, story, character interaction, world realisation and music. Too much Chadley. Definitely could’ve been trimmed. Overall some down but mostly up. 7 so far. It had to be 😊

I’m not sure how far I’m from the end after 42 or so hours (just reached chapter 9, haven’t looked at the trophy list)

Right now it’s an easy 9/10 for me. The story is great, love what they’re doing with the party members and gameplay is stupid fun. But the side quests range from neat to bland, heavily skewing towards the latter, imo. Like, the minigames themselves are somehow more substantial and interesting than pretty much any of the quests I’ve done so far – and I completed all the areas up until where I’m at 😅

It’s absolutely not something that “ruins” the overall experience for me, far from it, but it’s a big-ish flaw nonetheless to me.

Currently on 83 hours done a lot of the mini games, queens blood and like 63/88 for Johnny, continuing till the end now currently playing and on chapter 13. I’ll give it a 9/10 some controls are terrible looking at that cait sith section in a certain chapter 💀 loving the game though

I’m giving it a 10/10, Phenomenal game and a huge step up from the previous entry (FF7 Remake), the best JRPG so far this gen… easily.

@Player_1_Ready it’s not as good as Remake? Personally, I think Rebirth trumps it in every way and I can see a lot of people here probably feel the same. The amount of effort that went into this game and creating the world makes Remake look like a glorified tutorial/demo.

I absolutely adore it. The characters and the banter between them are so good, it’s been an absolute joy to play through. The gameplay is great too, building off the already great foundation from Remake and I’ve enjoyed all the mini-games. The only slight is some of the lighting and texturing but the art style itself is gorgeous which makes up for it. After I finish it I’m going to replay it. Looking forward to the final part in a few years and if Square are willing to revisit 6 or other older FF games in the series and put the same amount of care in remaking them, I would love it!

Waiting to play it still. I really wish I would’ve tried the demo on my 1080p tv as well, instead of only the 4k, to see if performance mode looked better on it, but oh well.

Waited until the end of last year to play Remake, which I absolutely loved, and I’m fine waiting years to play Rebirth. It’s awesome to see that a lot of people really love it though! 🤘

About 35 hours in. 8/10.

The open-world aspects of the game, while engaging in the first area, tend to drag the pacing down later on. The main story missions start to build up tension that you want to focus and build on, but then you get spat out into an open-world area that has you completely ignore the main story for a few hours.

Overall it’s a great game, I just wish it stopped trying to remind me of certain Ubisoft games…

On chapter 9 and absolute loving it. People mentioning bloat must have not played AC Valhalla or FF16 lol. Unless the end completely ruins it I’m stuck at 9-10/10. Doing everything in every area and somehow not bored 47 hours in

I would say a 9 or 9.5/10 overall since this game is much better than Remake in many ways. The gameplay and OST are fantastic and I liked the cast a lot more in Rebirth. The world design is very good unlike in Remake where there wasn’t much to explore. The side quests were also fun to do compared to Remake. One thing I do wish that is in Part 3 is a loadout system for materia so that we can change around materia suited to specific scenarios.
