Red Dead Redemption 2 Mod Fixes John Marston’s Classic Cowboy Outfit

This Red Dead Redemption 2 mod gives John Marston his classic outfit from the first game back, complete with his wolf belt buckle, vest, and trousers.

It’s funny to think that before Red Dead Redemption 2 released, fans of the first game were upset that they’d be controlling Arthur Morgan instead of John Marston. By the time that players eventually got to play as John in the sequel, it was a bittersweet feeling considering how attached we all got to Arthur. This was made worse by the fact that, to most players, John didn’t quite look like he was supposed to.

As outlined in this video from YouTuber Lab of Codez, there are numerous minor things about John’s model in the epilogue that don’t make him look like himself, such as the way his belt buckle hangs, the colour of his hair, and the way his clothes fit him. This led to some players even starting petitions to get Rockstar to tweak his look and make him resemble the John we all know and love from the first game – that didn’t happen, but at least we have modders working to give him his classic look back.

Take NexusMods modder GuiCORLEONEx794 for example, who has been tweaking Red Dead Redemption 2’s Cowboy outfit to make it more closely resemble how it was in the first game. The Cowboy outfit itself is already in Red Dead Redemption 2, but this mod tweaks it significantly to look like it’s supposed to.

According to GuiCORELEONEx794, the mod has better hat textures that are both more accurate to Red Dead Redemption 1 and are higher quality, features the same vest, shirt, boots, spurs, and neckerchief from the first game, and adds John’s iconic wolf belt buckle. The NPC version of Marston will also wear the Cowboy outfit starting from Chapter 3, with it being less worn than it is by the game’s epilogue, which is a nice touch.

Funnily enough, the mod was actually first created all the way back in 2021, it’s just been recently updated by Gui and a modder named SgtJoe to add a script to the belt and improve the textures on the hat, pants, shirt, and rest of the outfit. In case you were wondering how much John’s outfit being wrong bothered people, continuing to work on a mod two years later should be enough evidence.
