Red Dead Redemption 2 Player Recreates a Former President In-Game

A Red Dead Redemption 2 player has recreated former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant in Rockstar’s Western title as part of a wider mod project. Red Dead Redemption 2‘s story is one of the most iconic Western tales ever told, and it’s interesting to see it cross over with real-life history, even if only in a small way.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 modding scene isn’t as big as some other games on PC, with many instead choosing to mod other games such as Skyrim and Fallout 4. The tools for modding the game extensively weren’t really provided by Rockstar upon the game’s PC release, but that only makes what some dedicated modders have achieved all the more impressive. There are still mods that cover most elements of the game, with one Red Dead Redemption 2 mod addressing gender disparity throughout the Wild West. Hopefully the modding community perseveres with Red Dead Redemption 2, as it’s the perfect type of game to benefit from community input.

The recreation is of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, and comes from Redditor TheKey32. By using a side-by-side picture, players can see the resemblance is actually quite strong between the two. While Grant served as President from 1869 to 1877, a couple of decades prior to Red Dead Redemption 2, he also served as Commanding General during the American Civil War, so he definitely doesn’t look out of place in the game. For players using the recreation, he replaces Sheriff Malloy, the Sheriff of Valentine, during all the cutscenes and gameplay, although his voice will remain the same as in the default game.

According to the user, the recreation of Ulysses S. Grant is part of a wider mod, the NPC Makeover Project, which aims to bring classic Western figures, both real and fictional, into Red Dead Redemption 2. Recently, TheKey32 also added the legendary John Wayne character J.B Books into Red Dead Redemption 2, so it’s clear that there is a range of people being added in this project. It’s not clear who the user plans to add next, with no current plans announced, although at this point it could be almost anyone from this time period.

Broadly, it’s currently unknown what awaits the Red Dead Redemption 2 modding scene. It could be some time until Red Dead Redemption 3, and Rockstar seems to have broadly abandoned the game in terms of substantial content updates, so ultimately it’s now down to modders to ensure the game stays alive and well on PC. Projects like the NPC Makeover Project are definitely a great start, as a great way to make the game feel fresh once again.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
