Star Wars Fans Want Disney To Do Finn Right And Finally Make Him A Jedi

There has been a slew of Star Wars announcements this week, with the recent Star Wars Celebration bringing confirmation of new movies and Disney Plus series. Perhaps the biggest of the pack was the news that Rey will be returning in Star Wars: New Jedi Order.

At the Star Wars Celebration, which is still ongoing at London’s ExCel centre, Lucasfilm revealed that three live-action Star Wars movies are in development. One of these is a film set after the events of Rise of Skywalker and will feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order. Following this announcement, however, a popular fan uprising has been seen across the Internet calling out for John Boyega to return as Finn.

Star Wars: New Jedi Order will be set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, following Rey as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order as a Jedi Master, and has Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached as director. “I’ve always been attracted to the hero’s journey and the fact that the world needs many more heroes”, Obaid-Chinoy said on stage. Daisy Ridley walked on stage too, saying that she was “very thrilled to be continuing this journey”. But on social media, fans have been calling out Disney to bring John Boyega back.

Another popular tweet, with many likes and retweets, reads: “This is really cool but I desperately want them to give John Boyega the story he deserves. If he doesn’t want to come back, I 100% understand and respect that decision but they should at least try. They did him so dirty”.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy remains divisive among fans, with the last entry The Rise of Skywalker especially derided for “somehow” resurrecting Sith Lord Palpatine while John Boyega’s Finn was demoted in importance to the overall story. Boyega has been on record criticising Disney’s handling of his character, saying his role was “pushed to the side”. The comments came via an interview with British GQ in 2020, in which he also called out the entertainment giant for its handling of Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose as well.

Star Wars fans have not forgotten John Boyega and how Finn was sidelined, and have been calling for his return in the newly announced film. Over on the Star Wars subreddit, fans even want to see him as a Jedi in the new Jedi Order movie.

While there could still be surprises up Lucasfilm/Disney’s sleeve when it comes to the new film, there is also some bad blood between the actor and his former employer. But fans have made their voices heard.
