Why Last Stand Possibly Returning in Call of Duty 2024 is Concerning

Being a multiplayer-focused franchise for the best part of two decades now, Call of Duty has had its fair share of imbalances over the years, from weapons to Killstreaks to cosmetics. But by far some of the most controversial Call of Duty imbalances have come from the series’ vast array of multiplayer Perks. Designed to grant the player various advantages in battle, Call of Duty‘s Perks haven’t always functioned how they were meant to, or even worse, their intended function has only led to pure frustration.

Martyrdom is one of the best examples of this, letting the player essentially get instant revenge on their killer for free. Scrambler is another infamous Call of Duty Perk, designed to obscure the enemy’s radar to hide the player, but ironically reveal exactly where they are in the process. But above them all sits Last Stand, widely regarded as one of the worst Perks in Call of Duty history responsible for causing some real trauma. And if recent leaks are to be believed, fans might have to relive some of those traumatic memories once again, with Last Stand potentially coming to Call of Duty 2024.

Last Stand Is One of the Most Hated Perks in Call of Duty History

Technically originally used by AI enemies during the very first Call of Duty campaign, the Last Stand Perk sees players enter a prone downed state whenever they receive enough damage that would have normally killed them. In most iterations of Last Stand, downed players automatically swap to whatever sidearm they have equipped, where they have the opportunity to get immediate revenge on their killer. Downed players can be killed properly by simply shooting them again, or by throwing a grenade in their general vicinity.

When Last Stand was first introduced back in 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, it gained immediate infamy, and despite that, it continued to appear throughout the entire franchise in various forms, gaining even more notoriety over the years to the point where its name sends shivers down many fans’ spines. There are several major reasons why Call of Duty‘s Last Stand Perk is hated so much.

The most prominent of these is that it practically guarantees the user a free revenge kill, as although a downed player can be killed easily, that brief window of invincibility between standing and prone allows most players to lock onto their killer and start shooting, often long before the attacker even realizes they had the Perk equipped. Another reason Last Stand is hated in the Call of Duty community is that many of its iterations allowed teammates to easily steal a player’s kill, with it only counting as a full kill if the downed player is finished off. This was eventually fixed in Modern Warfare Remastered, but it remained a prominent issue with the Perk for years.

Last Stand Is Terrible In Every Iteration

In Call of Duty: World at War and Black Ops, an alternate version of the Perk named Second Chance appeared. A unique quirk of this iteration of the Perk was that it allowed players with the Perk equipped to revive one another from their downed state. However, this quirk came with its own annoyances.

It was too often the case that players with Second Chance on wouldn’t be revived, resulting in them just sitting there for 30 seconds while they slowly bled out. It was also irritating to be on the other end of Second Chance, with the player thinking they’d downed an enemy only to see them revived back to full health a few seconds later.
