World of Warcraft Might Get Another Dragonriding Drake Soon

World of Warcraft players might be able to collect an unexpected sixth type of drake for Dragonriding in Dragonflight in the near future.

World of Warcraft might be adding a new type of Dragonriding drake to Dragonflight soon. Though not surprising at first glance, the evidence points towards an unexpected addition to the growing collection of Dragonriding mounts in World of Warcraft.

Recently, World of Warcraft launched Embers of Neltharion, its first major patch for Dragonflight. The content update added a new zone, an expansion of the Dragonflight story campaign, and new customizations, glyphs, and abilities for Dragonriding mounts.

However, players might have just gotten a first look at another Dragonriding customization coming to World of Warcraft in the future. A new item called the Grotto Netherwing Drake was discovered on the Public Test Realm for Dragonflight. The Grotto Netherwing Drake is listed as an independent Dragonriding mount, which would make it the sixth of its kind. There are currently no icons, models, or other assets associated with this mount besides the item entry.

There is currently no proof this item will actually be added in the future, or how players will get it if it will be. Right now, Grotto Netherwing Drake has a Trader’s Tender cost associated with it, indicating it might come to World of Warcraft’s new Trading Post feature in the future. Items with a cost of 999 Trader’s Tender have usually been placeholders for the free Traveler’s Log reward, so it is possible this mount could be earned in such a way in the future.

That said, many agree it would be strange to offer a full Dragonriding mount outside the expansion’s campaign, so some wonder if the Grotto Netherwing Drake will be unlockable in Patch 10.2 or other future Dragonflight patches. World of Warcraft recently held a developer broadcast that hinted another dragonflight would be involved in the story soon, so it is possible the Netherwing Dragonflight of Outland could appear, giving players the chance to unlock them as Dragonriding drakes in the process.

In the meantime, players can access the first leg of the Embers of Neltharion story right now, with more chapters of the story dropping alongside Dragonflight’s new Aberrus raid on May 9. This will include Chapter 5 of the Embers of Neltharion campaign, which awards players with the Winding Slitherdrake–the first new Dragonriding mount added after Dragonflight. If World of Warcraft continues the trend of offering one new Dragonriding mount each patch, perhaps Dragonflight Patch 10.2 will give players the chance to ride a high-definition version of the shark-like dragons from Burning Crusade with the Grotto Netherwing Drake.
