Despite seeming minor, it is a crucial detail linked to the original source, where Shinichi earned it in a battle against Gotou, his toughest opponent. Since the adaptation follows the anime’s timeline, Shinichi should have been depicted with the scar in the live-action version as well.

Fans on Reddit have noted that the adaptation was not intended to strictly adhere to the source material, using it more for inspiration and situating the series within the Parasyte universe. This portrayal of Shinichi is meant to be a new interpretation within the series, not a faithful reproduction of the original character. Indeed, it was explicitly stated prior to the release that this was the case. Despite this, after the release, director Yeon Sang-ho contradicted these claims, stating that the new series is set about eight years after the original story. This explains Shinichi’s older appearance and his job, which serves as a cover for his revenge against the Parasites. As such, he should have been depicted with the scar above his eye, consistent with his appearance in the anime.
