Upcoming Xbox Series X Games

As the Xbox Series X/S enjoys its latest year, Microsoft’s platform is gradually amassing a respectable library. Consoles typically do not start to flourish until the latter half of their existence, once cross-gen stops being a priority and developers can focus exclusively on crafting projects for only the most modern systems. The Xbox Series X/S has yet to reach that point, although things are moving in that direction.

The last few years have produced plenty of fantastic games, particularly in the open-world genre. Elden Ring, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands were all good or great 2022 releases, and they offered wildly different experiences from each other. The year’s successor largely followed suit with projects like Dead Space, Street Fighter 6, Hi-Fi Rush, Remnant 2, Forza Motorsport, and Lies of P. What upcoming Xbox games are the most exciting? Which titles are expected to drop in 2024?

Please note that the focus is on the North American release dates of Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One games. Expansions will also be listed.

Harold Halibut, Sand Land, & More

April 2024 has been one of the year’s weaker months so far. That’s not to say this period has nothing to offer, but there are not all that many major releases. Still, games like Botany Manor, Sker Ritual, ArcRunner, and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes are all worthwhile details; if nothing else, they should be able to scratch an itch that few other projects might attempt to reach.

Sand Land could also be a fun take on the action RPG genre, especially for fans of Akira Toriyama’s manga and work. The game has an attractive art style along with vehicle-based combat that could help set it apart from other similar releases.

Hellblade 2, MultiVersus, & More

May 2024’s Xbox lineup is headlined by Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory’s long-awaited and highly-anticipated sequel. The first game followed Senua on a short but intense trip into hell, tackling mature and difficult themes in the process. Created using Unreal Engine 5, Hellblade 2 will dive further into Norse mythology, along with expanding the combat system to create something more visceral.

This month has more to offer than just Senua’s Saga, and the releases cover quite a few genres. Racing fans can check out MotoGP 24 or F1 24, while fighting fans can check out the next-generation version of Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 or MultiVersus. The indie scene also has a stacked lineup, including the likes of Indika and Paper Trail.

June 2024 Xbox Series X/S & Xbox One Games

Elden Ring, Elder Scrolls Online, & More

June 2024’s appeal comes down to an appreciation for expansions, with most of the month’s major releases being complements rather than full projects. Destiny 2, Elder Scrolls Online, and Elden Ring will drop brand-new DLC, all of which should be fairly robust. Despite the last expansion being something of a letdown, Destiny 2‘s The Final Shape has been amassing intrigue due to it marking the end of the storyline. ESO‘s Gold Road should be great, although it will likely be overshadowed by Elden Ring‘s Shadow of the Erdtree. The latter is not just the biggest announced expansion for 2024 but also one of the gaming industry’s biggest releases in general.

In terms of “new” projects, Killer Klowns From Outer Space could be an enjoyable addition to the asymmetrical multiplayer genre. Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance will bring Atlus’ turn-based JRPG to the Xbox ecosystem, and it should build nicely on the base version’s content.

Frostpunk, Final Fantasy, & More

While still a work in progress, July 2024’s Xbox lineup is starting to take shape. Another expansion, FFXIV will be releasing Dawntrail; if it is anywhere near as good as the MMO’s previous chapters, the DLC should be incredible. Bleak Faith: Forsaken garnered a mixed reception when it launched on PC, but the console port might be worth checking out for Souls-like fans. Finally, Frostpunk 2 should be a massive deal in the niche city-builder sphere, especially since its predecessor is also a fantastic survival game.

Wukong, Star Wars, & More

August 2024 is largely barren at this point, although that should gradually change over the next couple of months. Still, Black Myth: Wukong looks pretty good so far, with Game Science’s action RPG seeming set to offer tight combat, impressive visuals, and a captivating mythology. Dustborn is also worth keeping an eye on.

At the moment, the month’s biggest game is Star Wars Outlaws, Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft’s open-world action-adventure project. Featuring multiple planets, vehicular combat, and dialogue choices, Outlaws looks set to be one of the franchise’s most ambitious games.

Stalker & Warhammer 40K

Very few games have announced plans to launch in September 2024, but the two exceptions might be enough to keep most players captivated for the entire month. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is right up there with the year’s most highly-anticipated releases, and the open-world game looks primed and ready to be the franchise’s biggest entry to date. Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is another long-desired sequel that seems set to improve immensely on its well-liked predecessor.
